A friend of mine sent me this. He thinks it's a riff on my
Zapatista characters. I'm kinda on the fence, even though he did spot it in Pasadena...

This the first
Zapatista character I ever painted. If memory serves me right, I did it in 1998 at our
Secret Headquarters high above Pico-Union:
My Mom found this hand-painted poster on a wall in Mexico, circa 2004:
I like how they changed the pencil in my original to a spray-can in their version. The random EZLNs and other handstyles are pretty cool too. I have no idea who made the poster... I guess that's how it should be.
Some more examples
here.

"
No + Sangre!" -No More Bloodshed!- proclaimed over 30,000
Zapatistas this past weekend in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, in solidarity with the
National March for Peace with Justice and Dignity that took place in Mexico.
Zapatista communiqué available in Spanish
here. I'll post information in English as soon as I get it.

See more here and here.

A few more versions of my
Zapatista characters spotted around the world. Thanks to
Ashira for catching the one on the silkscreen, ready for mass-production, at an Israeli (!) anarchist pad; and thanks to
lehumanbeing and
CrysTAL for the ghost
mumu version...

I designed the characters up top in 2006 for the
Zapatista's La Otra Campaña. On my old blog, I had been keeping a record of the different interpretations and iterations that I'd found popping up literally all over the world -ahem- and in all sorts of different forms. Digging through my once-lost files, I found these examples (again.)

Max (age 6-ish) over at
Monkeyhouse Toys made these drawings based on the "ninjas" he's seen painted around his 'hood. I dig his rendition of the northeast-pointing
SH arrow on dude's shirt. "#1. Oh word?"
